SMART is the Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique, essentially a set of safety measures aimed at reducing yours and our exposure to mercury during the removal of dental mercury amalgam fillings. These safety measures were developed as a result of extensive scientific research collected by the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT). At Anokhi Dental we are SMART accredited which means we follow these safety protocols for your safety and protection when having mercury amalgam fillings removed.

These protocols mean that:

  • We provide you with a charcoal mouth rinse before and straight after removal of the filling(s).

  • We cover your hair and clothes with a protective cap and drape.

  • We use a latex-free rubber dam to isolate the tooth/teeth being worked on from the rest of the mouth and throat. This is to ensure that no amalgam sludge or particles can be swallowed or lodged under the tongue. which has a very rich blood supply. Absorption straight away and circulating around the body.

  • We provide you with a separate air supply through a mask over the nose in order to minimise inhalation of toxic mercury vapour. This is very important considering the fillings are being removed just below your nose!

  • We use a DentAirVac vacuum system specifically designed to remove and filter mercury vapours away from the immediate breathing area in the room.

  • We use a specific tungsten carbide drill to break the amalgam into chunks in a quick and efficient way. We also dispose of each drill after use as it gets dull with less cutting power

  • We use two powerful suction systems-one next to the tooth and one behind the rubber dam. During the procedure we also irrigate the area with copious amounts of cold water in order to “dampen down” the mercury vapour and keep the temperature of the metal down.

  • We duct air outside of the building rather than having it re-circulated.

So as you can see we take exposure to mercury very seriously at Anokhi Dental. Because your health is our priority!
